‘Fiscal mismanagement’ cited in closing 2 Magnolia charters
Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has decided to rescind the charters of these two schools, part of the Magnolia chain, because of "fiscal mismanagement" and other irregularities. This followed a recent district audit. One of the concerns is the related-party deal with the Accord Institute, which the audit found had received 3 million dollars for services.

The new Harmony School of Excellence-D.C., a spinoff of the large Harmony Public Schools chain of Gulen charter schools in Texas, "plans to open its doors this fall across the street from a traditional school that serves the same grade levels and has the same academic focus, highlighting a lack of coordination that has drawn increasing scrutiny in recent months." The article states that this choice of location surprised even DC Schools Chancellor Kaya Henderson. "Henderson called Harmony’s move an inefficient use of taxpayer dollars..." Continuing in the long tradition of Gulen charter schools administrators' denials, "Soner Tarim, superintendent of the Harmony charter network, said he hadn’t realized that Langley was a STEM school."

Charter school will move into St. Paul Industrial building
MMSA, which currently has 300 students, is planning to move to a new site and expand almost 800 students. The building in question, a former warehouse, has been bought by New Plan Learning, a Gulenist corporation that has leased facilities to a number of Gulen charter schools managed by Concept Schools, and that is essentially a reincarnation of Breeze, Inc, which had a similar relation to Concept. Renovations in the amount of $2.1 million are said to be planned. The article does not explain whether New Plan Learning will be paying this amount, or whether the school will have to pay it off as part of its lease agreement. The lease represents yet another related-party deal for the Concept school chain.

Hampden Charter School celebrates at MassMutual Center
"The Hampden Charter School of Science celebrated both its fifth year anniversary and its recent charter renewal on Friday night. A dinner and reception was held at the MassMutual Center....The school’s director, Harun Celik, told 22News that the school has a 100% acceptance rate to college and former students have gone on to attend Harvard, Boston University, and UMass."
This article is yet another example of how Gulen charter schools cleverly manage to manipulate local press to get good publicity. A 100% college acceptance rate does not signify much; almost any student can find some college that will admit them. Admission is not a guarantee of actual attendance or future success. Gulen charter schools push or even require students to be admitted to college because it allows them to boast a high college acceptance rate. Furthermore, the mention of some high-rated schools that graduates have gone to also means little. Virtually any high school will have some students go to such colleges. Without a comparison of percentages across schools, it is not an indication of the quality of the school.
It should also be noted that taxpayers must have paid (via the school budget) for the reception and dinner, which judging by photos displayed on the school website at the time was surely a non-trivial expense.

Proposed Charter School Would Avoid Co-Location Problem
"Under the leadership of Nihat Guvercin, whose charter chains have stirred controversy with personnel moves in Texas and New Jersey, the North Jersey Arts and Science Charter school system is planning to expand into New York City.....Before coming to New Jersey, Guvercin worked in Texas at the Harmony Charter School system under the parent organization Cosmos, which was behind 100 charters linked to cleric Fetullah Gulen, an influential Turkish opinion leader living in Pennsylvania."
Note that there is a slight inaccuracy here: the Cosmos Foundation (which has since been renamed Harmony Public Schools) is not behind 100 charter schools, but only the chain of 40-some Gulen charter schools in Texas. However, there are over 100 Gulen charter schools across the United States.

Commission approves Maine’s first virtual charter school
By unanimous vote of the Maine Charter School Commission, the application for the Lewiston-Auburn Academy has been rejected. The article describes the school as one "whose backers allegedly have ties to an imam at the center of political upheaval in Turkey." One commission member was concerned about the school's ties to Fethullah Gulen. Several individuals, including at least two commission members, were concerned or upset that the application "had misrepresented its support from local leaders, teachers and community members." The application "alleged support of the former mayor of Lewiston and the city’s economic development director," but in fact these individuals had only met with the school's would-be founders. Commissioner Ande Smith was particularly "incensed" over these misrepresentations, referred to them as lies, and wanted the office of the Attorney General to investigate. Other reasons for the rejection related to the curriculum, compliance with Maine law, and budget allocations for special education.

Chicago Math and Science Academy Expansion Backed by Students, Teachers
"Charter school expansion in the city can at times be controversial, but Thursday night, nearly 100 teachers, parents and students of the Chicago Math and Science Academy praised their school's progress and expressed support to boost its enrollment by 100 students....Although not one person spoke against the expansion, most of the attendees were current students, teachers or administrators."
It is important to note that teachers' support of Gulen charter schools cannot be considered to be independent, as they would likely lose their jobs if they did not show sufficient support for the school. As for the support of current parents and students, it must be borne in mind that many students and parents who were displeased with the school simply left it, and likely would not attend (or even be aware of) this event.

County board denies charter school appeal
Orange County's Board of Education denied Magnolia Public School's application for a new campus in Santa Ana. Pacific Technology School Santa Ana opened in 2009 as a statewide benefit charter, and that charter's expiration is June 30, 2014. Since then, the legality of these charters has been challenged (this is the problem cited by the school itself), and, according to this article, Magnolia Public Schools no longer runs enough schools to qualify for such charters. To circumvent these issues, Magnolia Public Schools has submitted a new charter petition to Santa Ana Unified School District, which has now been rejected, but can still be appealed at the county and state level.
"Additionally, the current school was one of five state-authorized charter schools last May deemed to be in 'poor financial condition,' according to the California Department of Education."

This article is a prime example of how Gulenist charter school operators skillfully exploit current trends and use them to garner positive publicity. "Mindfulness" is currently in the news (it is featured on the cover of the Feb 3, 2014 issue of Time Magazine, for example), and the entire article appears to be about how the school's curriculum has been changed so that "once a week, the students start class by taking about three minutes" to engage in a sort of meditation exercise. "Teachers" and "school officials" claim that this exercise - note carefully, this is 3 minutes per week - is calming the students and boosting academic achievement. No concrete evidence of any sort is provided to support this claim. The article amounts to a nice piece of free advertisement for the school.

If the charter school is approved, it could raise questions about whether there are political motivations. ... But many of those who support the charter school do so because of its partner, The Legacy Project, a massive development being spearheaded by Rev. Charles Jenkins, a close ally of Mayor Rahm Emanuel."

State board OKs plans for proposed charter school in Cary
Acting principal Necmettin Yasar claims the K-7 school has many more applicants than it can accept; as usual, this claim was printed without any verification.
The article states that "Parents are also attracted to the small classes at Triangle Math and Science, said math teacher Allison Thomas. The school allows no more than 22 students per classroom." It is unclear why this claim was not examined further, as according to the North Carolina Board of Education website (link) the average elementary classroom size for North Carolina is 18.8.
The article also states that "About 53 percent of the school’s population is Asian-American, Yasar said." US Census data (link) indicate that Cary's population is 13.1% Asian, a sign that the school is not enrolling a student body that is representative of the community.

Records show state activity during FBI probe of school
The article discusses how Louisiana's state Department of Education was aware of any ongoing federal problem into the Kenilworth school, yet this had no affect on their decision to renew the school's charter. Six days after the renewal approval, the FBI raided the school and left with boxes of documents.

Federal investigators eyeing Kenilworth’s vendor relations
A search warrant provided some insight into what federal investigators were seeking when they performed an unannounced raid on Kenilworth school on Dec 11, 2013. They are examining contracts with vendors, including cleaning and transportation services, owned by individuals of Turkish ethnicity.
One of the most shocking aspects of this article is a statement by Andrew R. Lee, the attorney for the Pelican Foundation, which operates the Kenilworth school. The article quotes Lee as saying "there is no law that prohibits charter schools from doing business with a company based on the owner’s ethnicity." Given that Kenilworth operates on public money, it is very disturbing if it is in fact legal for the school to discriminate based on ethnicity.

Critics knock process for more charter schools: Board to vote on 21 campuses amid mixed input from community
The article covers the role of Neighborhood Advisory Councils in Chicago Public Schools' process of reviewing charter school applications, and possible manipulation tactics used. Concept Schools has linked one of its proposed charter schools to a redevelopment project involving the Fellowship Baptist Church (Note: this is a widely-used Gulenist tactic for drumming up support for its projects - partnering with someone else to make them a stakeholder as well.) The Tribune was told by some advocates of the proposal that they had been bussed in to the meeting. Apparently some attendees were there because the Fellowship Baptist's Reverend asked them to attend, and they had scant interest in or knowledge of the proposed charter school. Even Concept's Vice President Salim Ucan admitted to being "embarrassed."
