Charter School Law: State Statutes

About 40 of the 50 United States have charter school laws.  These laws vary from state to state.  State regulation is more lax in some states than in others.  We have summarized below some websites where state charter law can be accessed.

Arizona
Arizona education law (Title 15 of Arizona Revised Statutes)
Charter schools are covered in Article 8.

California
This page on the website of the California Department of Education explains how to access laws relevant to charter schools.  These laws all appear in Title 5 of the California Code of Regulation, but they are not collected together in a single place.

Colorado
Colorado Charter Schools Act

Florida
The main Florida statutes covering charter schools are given on this webpage.
This webpage explains in detail where to find other laws that pertain to charter schools.

Georgia
The Georgia Charter Schools Act of 1998 (amended in 2005) can be found here in pdf form.

Indiana
Charter schools are governed by the Indiana Code, Title 20, Article 24.  Each chapter is a separate pdf file.

Louisiana

Massachusetts
Massachusetts charter school law is accessible at this link.

Missouri

Nevada
Charter law is covered in statutes NRS 386.500 - 386.610.   Click here to view Chapter 386, Sections 500-610.

New Jersey

New York

Ohio
Chapter 3314 of the Ohio Revised Code, governing charter schools, can be viewed by clicking here.  Note that charter schools are called "community schools" in the state of Ohio.

Texas
This page on the Texas Education Agency website explains how to access Texas laws applying to charter schools.  The two main bodies of law are Chapter 12 of the Texas Education Code, and Title 19, Chapter 100 of the Texas Administrative Code.
